Searching For The Yeast Infection's Cause?

A yeast infection is an overgrowth of yeast in any area of the body. Yeast infections are also called thrush (usually when referring to the mouth and digestive tract), and candida (candida is the specific name of bacteria causing yeast infections).

There is no single yeast infection cause. There are many things that can lead to yeast infections but the most common causal explanations are: a decrease in the acidity of your vagina due to the use of contraceptives, antibiotics, pregnancy, and menstruation (because blood is an alkaline, basic). All of these things alter hormone levels in the body causing changes in the vaginal environment and making it the ideal place for fungus to grow and thrive. Vaginal candidiasis is not referred to as a sexually transmitted disease, however, you can contract if from your partner if they have a yeast infection.

Some other common yeast infection causes include: hormonal changes related to the menstrual cycle; excess warmth or moisture in the vaginal area – typically related to exercising or too tight clothing; wearing a wet bathing suit for an extended period of time; not thoroughly drying the vagina after bathing; frequent bubble baths; using feminine hygiene sprays; glycerin based personal lubricants; sex without proper lubrication; using condoms with spermicide; poor diet; antibiotics - (antibiotics alter the normal PH balance of the organisms inside of the vagina and suppress the growth of bacteria that normally protect you and act as antifungal agents).; diabetes (increased sugar levels provide the perfect environment for yeast to flourish)

If this is your first yeast infection, you should make sure to visit a doctor and get a proper diagnosis. A wet mount analysis of the suspect matter is the only way to know for sure that you have a yeast infection. Many other conditions can appear similar to yeast infection, or even cause them, but they will just reoccur later. However, delaying their treatment could have serious health effects. With just one diagnosis, you will know what to look for if there is a next time, and then you can begin to treat it right away, at the first sign of symptoms.

Speaking of symptoms, here are some symptoms that may signify a yeast infection. You feel an intense burning sensation in the area of your vagina. Urinating and intercourse feel painful. You will see a clumpy white discharge; most people say it looks like cottage or ricotta cheese. This discharge can be thick, thin, white, yellow, or clear. Your vulva may also look red and swollen. You may also notice the smell, it smells just like cooking and brewing yeast, like beer.

So, now that you know what to look for, and how you may have gotten in this situation, get yourself treated!
